Intraday (ID) Timeframe

The Intraday market enables market participants to adjust their positions closer to real time and supports system balance as well as an efficient utilisation of cross-zonal capacity. In the Nordic region, cross-zonal capacity for the Intraday timeframe is currently provided using the Available Transfer Capacity (ATC) approach.

The Nordic Capacity Calculation Methodology (Nordic CCM) foresees the implementation of Flow-based approach for all time horizons. Flow-based Capacity Calculation considers the physical characteristics of the transmission system and the interdependencies between bidding zones, allowing a more efficient use of the grid compared to the ATC approach.

Nordic Flow-based Intraday aims to support the broader European development under Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC). SIDC establishes a single cross-zonal Intraday electricity market across Europe and consists of:

  • Continuous trading (IDC), where cross-zonal capacity is allocated continuously through a first-come, first-served matching process.
  • Intraday Auctions (IDA), where cross-zonal capacity is allocated through implicit auctions with simultaneous matching of bids across bidding zones.

The Nordic Flow-based Intraday project, started in January 2025, aims to introduce Flow-based Capacity Calculation in the Intraday timeframe within the existing Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC) framework.

The project is focused on ensuring Nordic readiness for the implementation of Flow-based Intraday Auctions (IDA), covering capacity calculation (CC) and market coupling processes including post-coupling. Continuous trading (IDC) will remain based on Net Transfer Capacity (NTCs).
