Long-Term (LT) Timeframe

The long-term coordinated capacity calculation project focuses on implementing the Nordic Long-Term Capacity Calculation Methodology, in accordance with the requirements set out in the Forward Capacity Allocation (FCA) Guideline. The methodology is applied to Month-ahead and Year-ahead timeframes. Due to the scenario-based approach used in the respective time frame Common Grid Model merging process, the respective flow-based results of each scenario are expected to vary. The resulting capacities will be published as information to stakeholders and forwarded to the applicable long-term allocation processes.

The implementation builds on the proven Flow-Based Methodology already in use in the Nordics for the single Day-ahead Market Coupling, thereby strengthening consistency and transparency of capacity calculation across timeframes

Timeline of the Long-term CCM

  • January 16, 2019 – The Nordic TSOs submitted the LT CCM to the Nordic NRAs
  • May 15, 2019 – Nordic NRAs referred the LT CCM to ACER
  • October 30, 2019 – ACER decision to approve the Nordic LT CCM (Decision 16/2019)

Long-term implementation was started in the Nordics in the end of 2024 after the Flow-based day-ahead go-live.

In the scope of the long-term project is to implement both month-ahead and year-ahead level grid models and to provide Flow-based calculated capacity data to the stakeholders via the NUCS platform.

Target is to provide market participants with predictable and stable capacity values, enabling them to plan and hedge their positions effectively. This reduces uncertainty and enhances market confidence.

From below links it is possible to download the handbooks of the Long-Term Capacity Calculation (LTCC) project. The Handbooks provide information on the publication for the Month-ahead and Year-ahead timeframes.

Published Handbooks

The previous version of the handbook published in 2025 only covered Y-1 publications which went live in October 2025. The handbook has now been expanded to include M-1 publications as well.
