Simulation results from parallel runs

The Nordic TSOs and the Nordic RSC jointly decided to start the external parallel run (EPR) of the Nordic flow-based methodology on 7 March 2022 for the Energy Delivery Day of 8 March 2022.

During the EPR, the flow-based parameters will be calculated and published daily on the JAO publication tool https://test-publicationtool.jao.eu/nordic/.

Updates regarding data

06 Sep 2024: The operational learning points document was updated on September 6th. This version includes new DA items on wrong capacity between SE4-DK2 being used in NTC and higher flow in internal CNEC in NO1 in NTC. Updates of the previous DA items “Modelling of FI-NO4 border” and “Changes in NP between DA and delivery in DK1” are also included in this version. The new version also includes several new intraday items. The wrong modeling of SE4-DK2 also affected ATCE, and there was also a model error on SWL for two days in July. It has also been added that ATCE allows for higher capacity than installed capacity and that ATCE does not take external capacities into account, which sometimes gives the impression of larger ID capacities than it will be in the market. Finally, the ATCE graphs for SE3A->SE3 was shown in the wrong direction in the graphical reports.

23 Aug 2024: Week 30 has been delayed due to the same error, see the update on 16 Aug. The CCM project found the error and will publish the week 28 – 30 early next week.

16 Aug 2024: Due to a discovered error for the congestion income in the continent, the SEW results for the SDAC area is wrongly calculated for week 28 and 29. We are looking into the results, and will hopefully fix the error and publish the market reports with correct numbers soon. Since this error does not lie inside the Nordics, the ATCE results should still be correct. Thus, the ATCE results for 28 and 29 are still published as usual.

16 Aug 2024: The GC Matrix for week 30 is delayed due to data issues. The issue is expected to be resolved next week.

09 Aug 2024: The CCM EPR Market Report for week 28 is delayed.
An error has been discovered in the processing of the simulation results from the external parallel run for week 28. Due to this error the publication of the CCM EPR Market Report for week 28 is delayed. We are currently working to find the cause and will publish the results as soon as possible.

26 Jul 2024: On June 26th, there was a decoupling in SDAC, and therefore, June 26th is not included in the flowbased results.

10 Jul 2024: The operational learning points document published on 10/07 updated the section 'Changes in NP between DA and delivery in DK1' with more information regarding affected weeks during the EPR and TSO measures to address the issue towards go-live.

08 Jul 2024: The EPR results will continue to be published on a weekly frequency during the summer
break. The TSOs will continue publishing the DA and ID results on a weekly basis throughout the summer
break to ensure an uninterrupted publication process. Please note the following content-related details:

• Due to resource restrictions during the summer break, the ID results and graphical reports will
be automatically published without CCM project review from week 28 to week 31. The review of
the ID results for these weeks will take place starting from week 32.

• The DA results and market reports will be reviewed and published by the CCM project during
the summer break.

05 Jul 2024: In the ATCE Graphical Reports from week 20, the reference capacities in the Trading Space figures are missing due to issues with the Transparency Platform. It is unknown when the issues are rectified,

19 Jun 2024: A new version of operational learning points has been published. In this document the TSOs collect and explain the operational learning points we have encountered during the EPR. The document is to be updated continuously and the latest update was published on Wednesday, June 19th. The main update for this version is the recategorization of all previously published learning points into ongoing, solved, and single occurrence/reoccurring items. In addition, items that are considered as other changes implemented during the EPR are replaced in their own category. Two new items from the day-ahead viewpoint have been added into the single-occurrence category, explaining the incorrectly set FB domains for Skagerrak (NO2-DK1, during 22. - 24.4.) and Fennoskan (SE3-FI, during 3. - 6.5. and on 17.5.). One point regarding countertrade in DK1 is added to the list of ongoing items. This version also includes a new section for operational learning points that are related to the intraday (ATCE) timeframe. An item related to non-zero ATC on border in outage during week 16 and an item regarding non-ID borders in ATCE have been published in this version.

3 Jun 2024: The ATCE Graphical Report for week 19 is delayed. It is expected to be uploaded by week 23, 2024.

26 Apr 2024: The industrial ATCE tool, i.e. the NorCap tool, is ready to facilitate the upcoming 6-month EPR. The relaxation parameters of the ATCE method are 2% PTDF relaxation, 0.01MW on allocation constraints and 10MW on CNEC relaxation. The TSOs use the industrial ATCE tool starting from week 17 to compute the energy delivery week 13. The results were published on Wednesday 24 April. Furthermore, the TSOs developed a prototype that is flexible for running the historical data in batch. The prototype tool follows the same IT specification as the industrial ATCE tool, yielding the same level of ATC ID results, but provides more flexibility to facilitate the batch rerun. The rerun results were published on Wednesday 24 April.

12 Apr 2024: New version of operational learning points published: This version includes new items on South-West Link (limited northbound flow and removed ramping constraint), changed ramping constraint on Swepol, and modeling of the NO4-FI border. An explanation about an error on NO1A-NO2 SEC flows that has been fixed since March 14 has also been added to this version. In addition, there is an update on the description that has been published earlier regarding Fennoskan ramping, explaining that a ramping limit of 600 MW/h has been introduced in the EPR and will also be used at flow-based go-live.

22 Mar 2024: New ramping limits SE3-FI, SE4-PL and SouthWest Link from w. 10: In order to ensure secure operation of the HVDC links when flow-based goes live, the TSOs will introduce or change the ramping limits for some of the HVDC cables. The changes are reflected in the EPR starting from week 10, and consist of: maximum ramping rate of 600 MW/h for Fenno-Skan (SE3-FI), 300 MW/h for SwePol Link, and removal of the ramping limit on SouthWest Link (SE3-SE4). 8 Mar 2024: New version of operational learning points published: This version includes two new items: "FRM changed to 10% for certain Swedish CNECs" and "Outage in Finland on cut P1 handled differently in NTC than in FB". The first will be presented in the next monthly online stakeholder meeting on EPR results (14 March, 9-11 CET) while the latter was already presented in the previous meeting (15 February). This version of operational learning points also includes updates to the following existing findings: "Countertrade (SE) only included in NTC" and "Modelling of series capacitors on SE2-SE3".

19 Feb 2024: The delay of the ATCE data publication of week 1 (01/01/2024 – 06/01/2024), 2 and 3 is caused by the new EIC codes on the SydVästlänken in Sweden, i.e. South-West Link. Week 1 ATCE results are split into two parts: old EIC does and new EIC codes. The remaining ATCE results of week 1, i.e. 07/01/2024 with the new EIC codes, will be published on 20/02.

16 Feb 2024: The update is due to the changes of the master data in EPR for South-West Link, which affects distribution of the congestion income and the flow between SE3 and SE4.

15 Feb 2024: The Market Results are removed due to data issues, and is expected to be rectified in week 8.

26 Jan 2024: The Grid Constraint Matrix week 1 is removed due to data issues, and will be re-uploaded after a new simulation has been conducted, which is expected be next week.

22 Dec 2023: Market report and appendix for the weeks 46-50 will be published after New Year. It is expected that all reports will be published during week 2.

15 Dec 2023: The Week 46 market report is delayed from the planned publication on Friday 15 December. The new planned publication date is by Friday, This is due to changes in the simulation output due to an update of Euphemia.

1 Dec 2023: The Week 44 market report is delayed from the planned publication today. The new planned publication date is by Friday, December 8. This is due to errors in the simulation that required a rerun of the flow-based simulation.

24 Nov 2023: Week 43 market report is delayed from the planned publication today. The new planned publication date is by Friday 1 December. This is due to delayed data and reporting issues related to daylight-saving time shift, which require further checks before the analyses and reports can be finalised.

8 Nov 2023: Market report appendices for week 28-37 have been revised and appendices for previous weeks have been removed due to errors discovered concerning congestion income, total socioeconomic welfare and FAAC NTC flows (only concerns week 31-35). The market reports and the market result file are correct though and has therefore not been revised or removed.

6 Oct 2023: The file previously published as "EPR substitution log" is now published as "EPR process log".

30 Jun 2023: First version of Operational Learning Points document published.

Throughout the months of the external parallel run of Flowbased Market Coupling, we have noted several operational learning points that have not necessarily been the main focus in the published weekly market reports. Therefore, have a collected them in this document to provide a summary of incidents and cases that have happened since the start of the external parallel run, and aim to explain the timeframe, why they happened, and in some cases the consequences. As the external parallel run is a learning-by-doing process, we hope that this document will serve as a help to better understand unexpected scenarios or errors the TSOs have encountered.

2 May 2023: New format to the Market simulation results file. The file now includes information on all available weeks, starting from week 50, 2022. This new file replaces the week-by-week Market simulation results file. Subsequentially, the Market simulation file is now published under the headline "EPR data on periods longer than a week".

14 Apr 2023: New format to the CCM EPR market report. The content is condensed into two pages, focusing on providing a better overview of graphs and relevant results.

Also, new version of the Phenomena report published (revision 11 April 2023).

31 Mar 2023: First version of Nordic CCM EPR Handbook published.

3 Mar 2023: The Market Simulation Results files for week 5-6 updated to include data on Buy and Sell volumes as well as F_AAC.

Buy and Sell volumes are the simulated volumes bought and sold in each bidding zone in the Nordic and in connected neighbouring countries.

F_AAC is the the simulated flow allocated by flow based (NP*PTDF). The TSO recommend to the use the F_AAC value instead of the SEC value.

10 Feb 2023: The Market Simulation Results files updated to contain data on the electricity transfer scheduled between neighboring bidding zones on the cross borders (i.e. Scheduled Exchange, SE).

Scheduled exchange calculation (SEC) uses a postprocessed computation using so-called ‘Flow Determination’. The SEC differ from the flow actual allocated by flow based. That flow is available in the GC-file as the NP_PTDF_FB for all border_CNE, and will soon be available in the same format as the SEC.

The TSO recommend using the flow based value when this is available.

20 Jan 2023: The 3-month NRA reporting period started on 12 December 2022 (i.e. week 50). Market reports for weeks 50 and 51 are now available.

The previously communicated go-live window - Q1 2024 at the earliest - remains unchanged.

Market results are currently delivered by the NEMOs using an alternative setup for the EPR, mitigating the challenges caused by the unavailability of the Simulation Facility.

31 Aug 2022: The starting date for the 3-month evaluation period will be reset

The Simulation Facility (SF) upgrade that started in early June 2022 is still in progress. Due to the unavailability of the SF, it has not been possible to perform any market simulations for the Nordic EPR during the 3-months evaluation period that started on the 5th of June 2022. Therefore, the Nordic CCM project has decided to reset the starting date of the 3-months evaluation period.

We will inform you about the new starting date as soon as the SF is back in operation to continue the market simulations for the Nordic EPR.

18 Aug 2022: New simulation results file for week 15 published

5 Jul 2022: Information on publication of parallel run data during summer 2022

31 May 2022: Data on physical flows and scheduled exchanges removed from the SF output data files for weeks 10-15
